Where to Eat and Drink Outdoors in NYC: Summer in NYC
Where to eat and drink outdoors in NYC. Summer in NYC. NYC Summer guide.
It is officially Summer in New York City! Time to enjoy the beautiful weather. In this video, we will take you to four different spots to eat and drink outside in NYC. To start, we also take you to a classic street food cart.
Take a look at the list below for all of the stops on this tour.
1: The Souvlaki Lady (Elpida’s Souvlaki)
22-04 33 St
Astoria, NY 11105
Grilled meat on a stick is a signature in the Summer. So, what better way to start off the day than with some souvlaki from a classic Astoria street food cart. Elpida, who hails from Thessaloniki, Greece, grills up some of the best souvlaki in Astoria. And if you know Astoria, that is high praise. In fact, we visited two spots for souvlaki in our Greek Astoria video.
Also, don’t miss the soutzoukakia, a rare find here in NYC. It is a Greek meatball dish from Smyrna (present-day Izmir). Soutzoukakia brings to mind kofte, which makes sense given the roots of the dish. Tried it for the first time by my grandma who stewed it in tomato, but here they grill it. It is packed full of flavor with a soft tender interior and crisp outside.
2: Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden
29-19 24th Ave
Astoria, NY 11102
Up next, our first drinking spot of the day. Bohemian Hall isn’t just any beer garden, but the oldest in NYC. This Czech beer garden dates back over 100 years. In fact, Greg grew up just blocks away and had a Czech neighbor who had been coming here for years!
Here, the vibe is a very diverse with a mix of families, younger people and more. It is also a great place to watch sports, especially soccer during big tournaments. They also sell hearty Czech specialties on the grill and other dishes.
In between stops, we took the ferry from Astoria to Long Island City. Check out the schedules here on the NYC Ferry website.
3: Anable Basin Sailing Bar and Grill
4-40 44th Drive
Long Island City, NY 11101
Now, a spot where we eat and drink. Not only that, but with beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline. Anable Basin Sailing Bar and Grill is a low-key unpretentious spot right on the East River in a part of Long Island City that has less tall buildings than the Southern end. Here, there is one special dish that we really like to order.
Cevapi, a Balkan skinless ground meat sausage, is pricier than at Bosnian restaurants in nearby Astoria, but don’t come with this view. Also, most Bosnian restaurants don’t serve alcohol, so this is the only spot we know where you can pair them with beer and a view. Along with the cevapi is lepinja, a griddled flatbread, ajvar, a roasted red pepper spread and chopped raw red onions.
4: Queens International Night Market
47-01 111 St (Behind the NY Hall of Science)
Corona, NY 11368
There is no way we could do a list of spots to eat and drink outdoors in New York City without mentioning the Queens International Night Market! We did an entire video last year on the many foods available at the Queens Night Market.
But, this year they made a big change. Now, you are able to drink beer or wine anywhere in the venue as long as you pick up a wristband! This is a game-changer compared to the confined space in years past. With all of the grassy space, you can make you own picnic without having to cook or bring a cooler. Everything is capped $5 or $6 and you are in one of the most diverse places in the whole city.
5: Leaf Bar and Lounge (Rooftop bar at Hyatt Place Flushing)
133-42 39 Ave
Flushing, NY 11354
