Frozen Dessert in NYC: Where to Eat Dessert in New York City

Frozen dessert in NYC. Where to eat dessert in New York City. Frozen desserts in New York City. NYC dessert tour. Desserts in New York City.

It is Summer in New York City! In this video, we will take you to ten frozen desserts from around the world in Queens.

Take a look at the list below for all of the stops on this tour. Many can be found on the below maps:

Jackson Heights, Woodside/Sunnyside and Elmhurst/Corona http://foodandfootprints.com/eat-queens-newyork-nyc-food-maps/

1: JoJu
83-25 Broadway
Elmhurst, NY 11373

Of course, coffee is a great way to start the day. Up first, JoJu, which specializes in “Modern Vietnamese Sandwiches,” they offer Vietnamese coffee. But, they also have something that is perfect for the Summer, a frozen Vietnamese coffee! They use Cafe du Monde, a chicory coffee popular in New Orleans blended with sweetened condensed milk and ice.

2: Tea Cup Cafe
76-23 Woodside Ave
Elmhurst, NY 11373

Up next, we head to the epicenter of “Thai Town” in Elmhurst on Woodside Avenue. Tea Cup Cafe originally began as a coffee shop and dessert cafe, but has since expanded to offer savory dishes. Here, we ordered a customized version of their desserts.

The “Rooty Tooty” is a Thai tea slush that comes with chunks of white bread and corn flakes. But, after trying it a few times, we asked for them to make a Thai tea slush just with cornflakes. This crunchy texture goes so well with the smoothly-blended ice and Thai tea. It also makes for an excellent dessert after enjoying a fiery plate of larb or hot bowl of soup.

3: Al Naimat
37-03 74th St
Jackson Heights, NY 11372

Next up, a dessert that is very popular in India and in this section of Jackson Heights. Kulfi is a creamy frozen dessert served on a stick, often made from a larger brand. But, here at Al Naimat, it is made in-house with no branding on the label. They offer three flavors - malai, pistachio and mango. Originally, we planned to order the pistachio, but they were sold out. So, we went with the mango instead.

4: 969 NYC Coffee
37-61 80th St
Jackson Heights, NY 11372

Our next stop was also in Jackson Heights. It is a place we have written up in our guide of where to eat near LaGuardia Airport. 969 NYC Coffee, one of our favorite spots, is a Japanese cafe offering a mix of coffee, matcha, Japanese dishes and snacks. So, we ordered the “Matcha shake shake,” a matcha smoothie blended with ice and sweetened condensed milk. On top, a scoop of matcha ice cream to double up the matcha!

5: Purple Dough
38-05 69th St
Woodside, NY 11377

What would a frozen dessert tour be without this Filipino staple? What is it? Of course, halo halo, which translates to “mix mix.” We stop at Purple Dough, an innovative Filipino-inspired dessert shop that offers many sweets with ube and other Filipino flavors. Here, we had a special treat. Mark, the owner and chef, made the halo halo for us on camera and explained the ingredients and some background.

6: El Bohio Grocery
98-17 Roosevelt Ave
Corona, NY 11368

Up next, we head to Corona to a seasonal spot only open in Spring and Summer. Sold out of a window of the former El Bohio Grocery are raspados aka piraguas aka frio frio. Whatever name you want to call it, this is a perfect Summer dessert. There is a huge block of ice that is shaved to a crisp texture before adding the flavor syrup and optional sweetened condensed milk.

Here, we ordered to coco con pina, which is a mix of coconut and pineapple. This is also the combination for a pina colada, which is exactly what it tasted like sans the rum. Speaking of rum, this is perfect if you want to add some on your own.

7: Los Poblanos Grocery
92-19 Roosevelt Ave
Jackson Heights, NY 11372

Nieves are some of our favorite frozen desserts. And Los Poblanos Grocery, which we have written a whole post about, is one of our favorite places to get it.

These Mexican ices are made by hand with fresh fruit. On this day, we ordered a pitaya, which is a cactus fruit.

8: Ya Llego Tu Papi (Raspado and Diablito Cart)
Outside of Planet Fitness 86-01 Roosevelt Ave
Jackson Heights, NY 11372

Comically, our next stop is located outside of a Planet Fitness on Roosevelt Avenue between 86th and 87th Street in Jackson Heights. Clearly, this cart has canceled out many a workout over the years! This cart offers lots of different raspados and also the Mexican diablitos, which is what we ordered. The mango diablito is an amazing mix of sweet, spicy, salty and tangy.

First, a cup is coated in hot sauce. Then, the ice is freshly shaved off of a huge block. Next, a large scoop of chopped fresh mango is added and then more ice is added to the cup. After, he adds mango syrup, chamoy (a sauce made with pickled fruit), hot sauce and chili powder. The combination is packed full of flavor, the syrup isn’t cloyingly sweet and is extremely refreshing. Note that he only comes out seasonally in Spring, Summer and early Fall, usually between 12PM and 8PM, or until he runs out of ice.

9: The Lemon Ice King of Corona
52-02 108th St
Corona, NY 11368

You can’t do a frozen dessert tour in Queens without a stop at The Lemon Ice King of Corona. What else can I say about this spot? I have been coming here for nearly my entire life, whether in the Summer or even in the dead of Winter. Fortunately, they are open all year long! It is a Queens institution.

Here, we ordered not only the signature lemon ice, but another funky flavor. That flavor? Peanut butter! The peanut butter ice works really well and has chunks of peanut and peanut butter chips in it. After your order, take the ice across the street to William Moore Park aka Spaghetti Park. This corner is a throwback to the days where Corona had a large Italian community.

10: Prontito
40-25 Forley St
Elmhurst, NY 11373

Our final stop was for an iconic frozen dessert in Jackson Heights and Elmhurst. Thanks to the large Colombian community here, cholados can be seen all over the neighborhood in the warmer months. Here at Prontito, there is a real art to how they put it together.

First, freshly crushed ice. Next, maracuya (passion fruit) and mora (South American blackberry) syrup is added. After, lots of chopped fruit including mango, pineapple, banana, strawberry and apple are scooped and put into the cup. Then, lechera, sweetened condensed milk is squeezed onto the mix. Finally, more ice is added, coconut flakes, freshly-squeezed lime juice, more fruit syrup and lechera. The result is a well-balanced creamy, tangy and fresh concoction.

Let us know in the comments below which dessert you would most like to try.
