Weekend-Only Tacos in Jackson Heights, Queens NYC
Tacos are one of our favorite foods to eat in the world. In our third vlog, we take it back to our home base of Queens, NYC. Here, we show you where to eat some of the best tacos in NYC. However, you can only find these tacos on weekends. Also, they are hidden in the back of bodegas and grocery stores in the neighborhood.
If you haven’t already, check out our first vlog for a taste of our lifestyle.
We had our first taste of weekend-only tacos in Jackson Heights back on New Year’s Eve 2017. On this frigid day, we sought refuge in the back of 5 de Mayo Food Market on Roosevelt Avenue. Thanks to a post from Eating in Translation, we were aware of the offerings of a place we had passed by countless times before. As we walked into the back of this unassuming grocery store, the aroma of goat and offal lured us to take seats in the back. Quickly, we were hooked after our first bite of taco de tripa (intestine) and sip of consome (goat soup).
After several visits, we learned of other spots including San Antonio Farm Grocery in the back of a corner bodega and Super Star Farm a few blocks away. We decided to create this video to show you exactly where to find these delicious tacos due to the hidden nature of them. Below, we list a guide of the three spots we highlighted in the vlog. Also, these spots can be found on our Queens food maps

At first I was thinking of the old Pace Picante sauce commercials where a bunch of cowboys mock salsa made in New York City. In my mind’s eye, they were sitting around a campfire saying - taco tour in New York City….. As it turns out, these tacos look legit. When you have to go to the back of a bodega to get your food it adds a certain je ne sais pas. I don’t know what that means in Spanish but heck, it sounds alright.
HAHAHA that commercial brings me back! Remember that very vividly. We know exactly what you mean - there is a certain feel to going to hidden spots for food.
I love the idea of Weekend Tacos and secret places to find great food. I’ll definitely keep track of this for my next visit to NYC because I think two of the best ways to get to know a neighboorhood are to walk around in it and to eat their food! I don’t think I’ve ever tried goat so would probably make 5 de Mayo Food Market my first stop!
I have heard of Tripa Tacos but have yet to try them. This is a great guide. Yes, there is no way I would find these great places without some help. They are tucked away, but they look fantastic. Next time I am visiting my sister in New York, we will have to plan a Taco Tuesday outing in Queens.
Weekend-only tacos…I had no idea, but that is a very interesting concept! I imagine that it increases the appeal to these tacos and I love eating “on the backstreets” of cities…that very local food is some of the best you can find. Although I’ve been to NYC several times, I’ve never heard of any of these places, but now I want to try them!
The tacos look delicious esp. the chilli relano. I haven’t been to New York but I’ll bookmark this list because I really enjoy tacos and a taco walk sounds like a nice thing to do!
Gotta say, the tacos do look very good, though being from California and having traveled extensively through Baja, I’m pretty snobbish about authentic and delicious tacos. But, given your recommendation, I might have to give these a try next time I am in New York City … man, that does sould like a salsa commercial. 😉
Mmm, gotta love tacos, or actually any Mexican food. I’ve never been to Mexico but if the food is half as good as the Mexican food I’ve eaten around the world I think it’d be foodie travel paradise! Where’s the best Mexican food you’ve eaten?
Right you had me at Tacos, I just love Mexican food. I actually had soft shell tacos last night for dinner 🙂 I love that these places that only do Tacos on a weekend are hidden in the back of bodegas and grocery stores in the neighborhood. I would definitely love to try some of these places out next time that I am in NYC
We fell in love with tacos from the taco truck in our neighborhood in Seattle. We’ll be heading to New York City this summer, and can’t wait to check these places out!
Tacos are some of my FAVORITE food to eat as well! I just can’t get enough and could eat them any time of the day, especially breakfast tacos! Now I have a reason to return to NYC and try all of these yummy places 🙂
Oh yeah! Let us know if you come to NYC - would love to share some local tips
