In this video, we will take you to three spots for South Indian food in New York. One spot in Manhattan and two in Queens.

1: NY Dosas Cart in Washington Square Park

Our first stop for is the famous NY Dosas Cart located in Washington Square Park in Manhattan. This cart has received plenty of acclaim for over 15 years. Whenever you come to this cart, there will be long lines for good reason.

Thiru, the owner, hails from Sri Lanka and opened the cart after working at Dosa Hutt in Flushing, Queens. Coincidentally, or not, it is one of the three places we visit in this video!

Here, we ordered the Special Pondicherry Dosa along with a Vegetable Samosa. The dosa is made fresh to order with a wonderful sourdough flavor from the fermented lentil and rice flour. Interestingly, there is toasted coconut inside, which gives it another layer of flavor.

2: Ganesh Temple Canteen

Our second stop takes us into Flushing, Queens. Located inside a Hindu temple, the Ganesh Temple Canteen may be one of the city’s most unique eateries.

Here, we are joined by Greg’s stepfather, Prem, who grew up in South India. We ordered three different dosa.

The Spicy Hyderabadi masala dosa, which has a spicy green filling, the Mysore Masala Dosa, which comes filled with a spicy red chutney and the Paper Dosa, which comes with no filling. Also, we ordered idli and masala vada. Everything came with plenty of sambar and coconut chutney.

3: Dosa Hutt

Our third and final stop for is right next to the Ganesh Temple Canteen.

As you may recall from our first stop, this is where Thiru of the NY Dosas Cart honed his craft.

But, in spite of the name “Dosa Hutt,” we didn’t order any dosa here. Instead, we ordered several different South Indian vegetarian dishes. These included vada, onion pakoda, poori with vegetable korma and uthappam with tomato and onion.
